week two

of consulting is just a memory and i don't even know how it happened. it's like being in limbo, waiting for the next life to come and claim you. for now, i must go and look at two chapters simultaneously.

k. in the wild

wow. shovel shaving is WEIRD. i'm becoming so fast with the spade i might just have to start double fisting, with the left and producing notes with the right;-P
also, learning about plains archaeology hands-on is something that should be experienced mandatory style by every new resident of this province.
like working 10 hr days. i sleep like an infant afterwards;-D
and, i can't believe i'm admitting to this, but i'm starting to understand the obsession with the square trowel...don't get to hasty with the triumphal looks yet though. my loyalty to my 7 yr old, triangular marshaltown remains firm. but i can see the allure of the other team.

all in all, a good week. but i had no idea human body also included muscles in do you stretch those?!

p.s. hot chocolate saves lives

stay tuned for the report next weekend.

ps. apparently this place is also the current diamond mining capital of the world. who knew. more about that some other time

luck in a pot

last night margaret k., historical archaeologist and prof, hosted the annual department potluck at her lovely home. food was tasty, fire warm, people chatty.
good times.
afterwards heather took the more restless among us to a pubcrawl at the pat, dolly denise came along, of course, where we danced the night away.

ps. more in flickr, as always

the weather is abysmal

so my thoughts stray to such delights of my girly heart as...yes, frocks.
i've found some photos of the store fronts of my favourite israeli designer, naama bezalel, and here they are for you to take a peek. the themes of the designs come from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and the dresses are usually the best part of the current collection.
i've only been to the smaller one (above), located on sheinkin street, in the hippest and most chic part of tel aviv. the bigger one is on dizengoff st, and i'll be setting up a special fund soon, so as to squirrel-up some $ for the next time i return to that fabulous place! let's hope our brave canadian loonie keeps its high position on the currency market, eh?

happy weekend, everyone!

seen & heard 4

in cara's a**h!!2 class this morning.

laptop girl: diligently typing in cara's every word
jock boy: grinning flirtaciously,"that's a good way of taking notes. does it help remembering too?"
lg: "no, it's about the same", goes on typing

moral: don't flirt with me when i'm learning about absolute dating techniques, dumbnut.

cara's a good lecturer, though today she was worried about the amount of material she had to unload on her wee students in just one short hour. personally, i think she did rather well. she's got excellent interactive skills, uses humour generously, and encourages the youngsters to ask questions and think critically. her class is on the large side but students take participation and ask questions and answer verbal pop quizes like little angels. i wonder if it's not simply because their prof is so approachable and friendly;-) though of course there is a chance they are interested in archaeology too. (incidentally, no striking eye candy, but lots of interesting faces).

on the home front, k. reports that there have been some developments in the south corner of her living room. see below.

k. gets around

a rather full saturday, what with kristen leaving for the uk, and holding court at calories, and kim's house warming, which turned into a till-dawn affair, your correspondent was getting a whole lot of use out of her party clothes...

mrs. dolly enters stage left

this is mrs. dolly.
here she can be seen, still in her traveling disguise

and here you can see that she's having trouble adjusting to her new life on the prairies.
oh, the strange inhabitants! so overly and bizzarely friendly!
"i want to return to my snooty ontario haven!", laments mrs. d.
"miss gibson, miss gibson, do take me back. do!"
